The former officers charged in Tyré Nichols’ death could now be sentenced as late as October, nearly a year after three of them — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith — were convicted at trial.
The sentencing dates come less than a month after Bean, Haley and Smith were acquitted of all charges at the state level.
Attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, who represent Nichols’ family in its lawsuit against the City of Memphis, called the jury’s decision a “devastating miscarriage of justice” in a statement released to media.

Defense attorneys representing the three defendants made their closing arguments Wednesday afternoon and continued through 7:20 p.m.

The reasoning for opposing a stay stems from wanting the civil case to keep going and not get bogged down because of the risk to taxpayers.
Lawyers for the two officers argue that although all five officers have been charged in Tyre Nichols’ death, not all five were present during both interactions Nichols had with the officers that night.
