The announcement comes ahead of the end of a two-month truce on the controversial project as well as efforts by local leaders to slow it down and stop it.
‘I now understand the science of groundwater aquifers and the complex of laws and regulations that keep an aquifer healthy,’ says geologist Deborah Baker Carington. ‘I also understand the very real risks an oil pipeline spill would pose to the region’s most precious resource, the Memphis aquifer.’
Former Vice President Al Gore joined with Memphis residents fighting construction of the Byhalia Connection Pipeline, which he called a “reckless, racist, rip-off.”
One of the hearings scheduled for next month will be on the issue of whether an oil pipeline company has a right under state law to use eminent domain proceedings to gain access to property it needs to build the pipeline.
Local resistance to the Byhalia Connection oil pipeline project has been gaining momentum recently. And with a new president in the White House, the project may face tougher scrutiny from federal regulators as well.
The proposed pipeline running through portions of Shelby County would connect two existing crude oil pipelines running from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast.
Landowners affected by the pipeline could expect an offer that is above fair market value, would still own the property and would have few restrictions, but could not build a permanent structure on the land.
Public meetings about the proposed crude oil pipeline called the Byhalia Connection are scheduled in Memphis and North Mississippi Jan. 21-Feb. 8.
The Memphis Child Advocacy Center recently received a grant of $40,000 from the Valero Benefit for Children.
