Bill Lee signed a law that nullifies a Memphis ordinance that banned pretextual stops, which was passed in 2023 after Tyre Nichols’ death.
It happened amid Tyre Nichols' family and local Democratic lawmakers accusing the bill’s sponsor of deceit.
“Memphis and Shelby County have, in some respects, truly become more threatening in recent years; traffic fatalities have risen, especially since 2020; fewer people are able to legally drive; and people of color face more discrimination on the road and in court,” Decarcerate Memphis’ new report said.
The Shelby County Commission gave final approval Monday, Oct. 2, to a pair of ordinances calling on the Shelby County Sheriff to collect data on specialized units as well as traffic stops, use of force and citizen complaints. It rejected an ordinance asking the Sheriff’s Office to ban pretextual traffic stops.
The City Council has two ongoing political potboilers: the residency requirement to seek a citywide office and moving City Council district lines.
