For the second day in a row, the Shelby County Health Department reported fewer than 60 new coronavirus cases.

The agency also reported one new coronavirus-related death on Wednesday, April 7.

Wednesday’s number of new cases is 59; Tuesday’s number of new cases was 55. At the time of publication for this story, the number of new tests was unavailable, rendering the day’s positivity rate also unavailable. 

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 91,906 cases, including 1,575 deaths.

The latest available area hospital capacity figures are current as of 5 p.m. Sunday, April 4.

At that time, there were 138 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System. 

According to the HRTS, 91% of area ICU and 89% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 15% of patients in area ICU beds were either COVID-positive (49) or suspected of having the coronavirus (2). About 6% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (89) or suspected of having the coronavirus (28).

And 35 area ICU and 255 area acute care beds were available.

Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Wednesday, the agency reported 818,008 total coronavirus cases, including 11,967 deaths, 853 current hospitalizations and 793,488 inactive cases.

About 7.3 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
