Coronavirus: Fewer than 80 new cases reported

The Shelby County Health Department reported fewer than 80 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, May 11. 

The agency reported 79 new cases and two new coronavirus-related deaths.

The 79 cases come from 4,895 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 1.6%. 

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 96,863 cases, including 93,665 inactive cases, 1,566 active cases and 1,632 deaths.

There were 218 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Sunday, May 9, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System.

According to the HRTS, 87% of area ICU and 88% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 26% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (80) or suspected of having the coronavirus (5). About 7% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (138) or suspected of having the coronavirus (16).

And 28 area ICU and 270 area acute care beds were available.

Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.
