A new federal racketeering indictment unsealed Thursday in Memphis federal accuses six alleged Ghost Mob gang members of conspiracy to murder and attempted murder in the aid of racketeering for a 2020 incident firefight with a rival gang.

“What we need most are financial resources for intervention and prevention, additional patrol officers, and case support to strengthen MPD’s investigations,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said.

The Memphis Police Department reported in July crime was down 20% overall compared to the same point in 2024. At the time, other major cities were also seeing declines.

Four children were shot in a shooting late Sunday night in the Hickory Hill area of Memphis.

The three former Memphis police officers convicted in the 2023 death of Tyré Nichols will be getting a new trial in federal court. But it could look different this time around. 

The case involves a battle over the rank of second lieutenant, which city officials created for the Memphis Police Department in an effort to get more front-line supervisors in the field.

The 16-year-old has been charged with attempted second-degree murder. His mother has been charged with being an accessory after the fact.

A home invasion and shooting of a law clerk started a chain of events that has resulted in three former Memphis police officers getting a new criminal trial for their role in Tyré Nichols’ death. 

This is at least the second stabbing at the jail this year. 

On Tuesday, The Daily Memphian obtained an MPD report that gives more details on the shooting that ultimately led to U.S. District Judge Mark Norris’ recusal. A 14-year-old is charged in that shooting.

Ricky Floyd, senior pastor of Pursuit of God Church, was killed early that morning outside Momma’s bar south of Downtown Memphis in the early morning of March 12.

Former public official DeAndre Brown and his wife Vinessa Brown were charged with misusing $1.38 million in public money. The pair ran the Lifeline to Success non-profit, which is now also under scrutiny.

A chain of events that eventually led to the three men being granted a new trial centers on comments allegedly made by the judge who formerly presided over the case as well as the carjacking and attempted murder of one of that judge’s former law clerks.

Judge Sheryl Lipman also granted a motion from The Daily Memphian to unseal records in the case, which included the reason Mark Norris recused himself.

DeAndre Brown and his wife Vinessa Brown allegedly misappropriated more than $600,000 in public funds, a comptroller’s investigation found. The office also identified more than $750,000 in “questionable charges.”
