In 2008, a kid from Chicago helped lead the Memphis Tigers to the NCAA championship game. Now he’s back in town to play for the Memphis Grizzlies.

In the summer before his first season in charge at Whitehaven High, former Memphis point guard Willie Kemp will coach the Beale Street Boys in The Basketball Tournament.

When the Memphis Grizzlies concluded summer league practice Sunday, all the players wandered to the sideline of the practice court to take off their shoes. But not Jackson. He couldn’t resist shooting the basketball.

The second-year big is one of the main attractions on the summer league roster. With 23 points, he led the way for the Grizzlies to secure a win over the Bulls.

Calling it an “easy decision,” Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane was so excited to make his contract extension official that he accidentally signed on the wrong line. 

After a passionate 26-minute introduction of Marcus Smart in Las Vegas, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins was yelling “Let’s freakin’ go!”
