Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.

If Penny Hardaway gets Memphis to the NCAA Tournament next season, he won’t do it with a glittering collection of one-and-dones. He’ll do it with players like Williams, who don’t need all of the smoke.
