City Council delays move toward solid waste fee moratorium
The city administration says problems with garbage collection services aren’t solved yet but that the situation is improving.
City Chief Operating Officer Doug McGowen told City Council members Tuesday, July 14, he hopes to have the performance in parts of Cordova and Hickory Hill handled by a private contractor cleared up by next week.
That’s when the council will resume a discussion about the idea of giving residents in what is known on city waste collection maps as Area E a three-month discount on the solid waste fee they pay.
Council member Rhonda Logan delayed Tuesday a move to take the “moratorium” to a council vote for at least another week as she requested more information from the administration.
Logan’s idea is to discount the $29.96 a month fee to $22.80 for three months in Area E. The $7.16 difference is the amount the solid waste fee was raised by the city last year to pay for improvements to the service.
McGowen has said the “moratorium” would cost the city $841,000.
