Coronavirus: No new deaths for second day in a row; positivity rate down to 3%

For the second day in a row, the Shelby County Health Department reported no new coronavirus-related deaths. 

The agency also reported only 71 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The 71 cases came from 2,218 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 3.2%.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 31,462 cases, including 29,345 inactive cases/recoveries, 1,660 active cases and 457 deaths.

There were 172 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds, as of 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, per state data; 53 of those were in intensive care units.

According to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System, 82% of area ICU and 89% of area acute care beds were being used.

About 17% of area ICU patients were either COVID-positive (53) or suspected of having the virus (6). About 6% of area acute care patients were either COVID-positive (119) or suspected of having the virus (19). 

And 76 area ICU and 280 area acute care beds were available.

The Tennessee Department of Health reports statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Monday, Sept. 28, the agency reported 193,732 coronavirus cases, including 2,389 deaths, 710 current hospitalizations and 176,030 inactive cases/recoveries.

More than 2.8 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
