Shelby County adds 159 cases to coronavirus total

The Shelby County Health Department reported 159 new coronavirus cases today, after delivering the news that there were 59 new cases Sunday.
In addition to adding those patients to the county’s total, the Health Department reported four new coronavirus-related deaths on Monday, Oct. 12.
The 159 cases come from 3,853 tests, which makes the day’s positivity rate 4.1%.
Shelby County’s reported total of people affected by coronavirus is now 33,134 cases, including 31,081 recoveries, 1,516 active cases and 537 deaths.
There were 179 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Sunday, per state data; 62 were in intensive care units.
According to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System, 84% of area ICU and 86% of area acute care beds were in use.
About 19% of area ICU patients were either COVID-positive (62) or suspected of having coronavirus (3). About 6% of area acute care patients were either COVID-positive (117) or suspected of having coronavirus (18).
And 66 area ICU and 334 area acute care beds were available.
The state Department of Health releases new coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.
As of Sunday, the agency reported 214,717 coronavirus cases, including 2,767 deaths, 985 current hospitalizations and 193,849 recoveries.
About 3.2 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
