Fewer than 200 cases added to Shelby coronavirus total

The Shelby County Health Department reported fewer than 200 coronavirus cases on Thursday, Oct. 29.

It was only the second time in the past 12 days that the number of new cases was under 200. Besides Thursday’s 188 cases, the Health Department reported 187 cases on Sunday, Oct. 25.

The agency also reported one new coronavirus-related death on Thursday.

The 188 cases come from 2,691 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 7%.

In Shelby County, 547,134 coronavirus tests have been performed; 8% of those have been positive. And 316,636 individuals have been tested for coronavirus; 12% have received a positive test result. (The total numbers differ because some people have been tested multiple times.)

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is 37,192 cases, including 33,769 inactive cases (recoveries), 2,853 active cases and 570 deaths.

The number of area patients hospitalized with coronavirus continues to rise.

There were 283 COVID-positive patients in area hospitals as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, per state data; 86 were in intensive care units.

According to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System, 92% of area ICU beds and 89% of area acute care beds were in use. 

About 22% of area ICU patients were either COVID-positive (86) or suspected of having coronavirus (1). About 10% of area acute care patients were either COVID-positive (197) or suspected of having coronavirus (21).

And 34 ICU and 268 area acute care beds were available.

Tennessee’s Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus statistics at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Wednesday, the agency reported 254,220 coronavirus cases, including 3,241 deaths, 1,254 current hospitalizations and 224,822 inactive cases (recoveries).

About 3.6 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
