Coronavirus: More than 50,000 doses administered

According to the latest data available from the Shelby County Health Department, more than 50,000 coronavirus vaccine doses have been administered.

The 50,094 vaccinations include 37,838 people who have received at least one dose and 12,256 who have received two doses.

As of Jan. 26, just over 6% of people in Tennessee have received only one vaccine dose versus 2.76% in Shelby County, according to Tennessee Department of Health data.

The highest is Unicoi County, in East Tennessee, at 9.56%. (That county’s population is about 18,000, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.) The lowest county is Sevier County, also in East Tennessee, at 2.07%. (Its population is about 98,000.)

The state Department of Health recently added people living in households with “medically fragile children” to Phase 1c of its vaccination plan. 

Shelby County is still vaccinating those in phases 1a1 and 1a2.

The Shelby County Health Department reported 446 new coronavirus cases and 13 new deaths on Thursday.

The 446 cases come from 4,389 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 10.2%.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total of 81,657 includes 75,997 recoveries, 4,419 active cases and 1,241 deaths.

There were 365 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System. 

According to the HRTS, 91% of area ICU and 89% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 27% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (99) or suspected of having the coronavirus (2). About 15% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (266) or suspected of having the coronavirus (41).

And 36 area ICU and 263 area acute care beds were available.

Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.

As of Wednesday, the reported total of 715,806 includes 9,316 deaths, 2,003 current hospitalizations and 668,021 recoveries.

About 6.2 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
