Coronavirus: More than 80,000 vaccines administered locally

More than 80,000 novel coronavirus vaccines have been administered in Shelby County, according to the latest Shelby County Health Department data.

According to those figures, 59,093 people in Shelby County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose; 21,654 people have received both COVID-19 vaccine doses, meaning they are fully vaccinated.

And 80,747 total doses have been administered in Shelby County.

At the present time, Shelby County is vaccinating phase 1a1, 1a2 and those age 70 and up on an appointment-only basis. Slots are currently filled, but people can check online or to call (901) 222-SHOT (7468) to be notified when appointments are available. People can also sign up for the VaxQueue standby list.

The Shelby County Health Department reported 278 new coronavirus cases and one new coronavirus-related death on Monday.

Those 278 cases come from 3,781 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 7.4%.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 85,076 cases, including 80,406 inactive cases (recoveries), 3,291 active cases and 1,379 deaths. 

There were 275 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Sunday, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System. 


UTHSC plays key role in COVID vaccine research


According to the HRTS, 93% of area ICU and 91% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 23% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (84) or suspected of having the coronavirus (2). About 11% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (191) or suspected of having the coronavirus (40).

And 28 area ICU and 202 area acute care beds were available.

Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Monday, Tennessee’s reported coronavirus total is 745,826 cases, including 10,566 deaths, 1,294 current hospitalizations and 707,098 inactive cases.

About 6.5 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
