Coronavirus: New cases hover around 100

The Shelby County Health Department reported 97 new coronavirus cases and zero new coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday, March 17. 

Those 97 cases come from 1,538 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 6.3%.


Public COVID-19 vaccination sites closed Wednesday


According to the latest Shelby County Health Department information, 158,658 people in Shelby County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose and 67,798 people have received two COVID-19 vaccine doses, making them fully vaccinated.

In all, 226,456 total doses have been administered in Shelby County.

Shelby County’s overall reported coronavirus total is now 89,778 cases, including 87,227 inactive cases (recoveries), 1,012 active cases and 1,539 deaths.


Coronavirus: Fewer than 100 new cases reported


There were 134 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System.

According to the HRTS, 91% of area ICU and 89% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 13% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (46) or suspected of having the coronavirus (5). About 4% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (88) or suspected of having the coronavirus (31).

And 35 area ICU and 265 area acute care beds were available.


Mississippi opens vaccines to all


Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Tuesday, March 16, Tennessee’s reported coronavirus total is 794,137 cases, including 11,650 deaths, 676 current hospitalizations and 770,011 inactive cases (recoveries).

About 7,005,827 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
