$10 Deal: RP Tracks
The turkey club sandwich at RP Tracks is good, but the french fries are tops. (Jennifer Biggs: Daily Memphian)
Last week I grabbed lunch at RP Tracks, an old hangout in my younger years, and took a logo cup of iced tea with me when I left. I had it in my hand when I ran in to do an errand and when I was paying, the clerk looked at it and said:
“Man, I got so sick last time I went there.”
I guess my face showed my concern, so he quickly explained.
“Shooters. It wasn’t the food.”
Ah. That I understand. It’s a place where even at a Monday lunch, there were folks enjoying an alcoholic beverage or two at the bar, and yes, there are shooters to be had at Tracks.
But there are also burgers, sandwiches and nachos, including the “world famous” BBQ tofu nachos. We were there in search of a good club sandwich and knew that however that turned out, we’d end up with great french fries.
For $9.75, you can get a turkey club with bacon, Swiss and American cheeses, lettuce and tomatoes. You’ll need to ask for mayonnaise, if that’s your condiment of choice with turkey; it’s mine and it didn’t have any on it.
But it was a solid sandwich and served with a big handful of some of the best french fries in town. They’re hand cut to order and like the best fries do, come with lots of crunchy bits around the bottom, the little pieces that fry up super crisp and end up somewhere between a french fry and a potato chip.
I adore those tiny crunchy pieces and would be a happy diner if I could get a whole order of fry bits. I mean it.
Much of the menu hovers around $10. The BBQ tofu and the original nachos are $10.25. The chicken sandwich is $9.75, but if you want the marvelous chicken sandwich (with bacon and barbecue sauce), you’ll have to pony up an extra 50 cents.
Whatever you choose, you’ll end up with a lunch that’s easy on the pocket and it’s the same menu at night so you won’t do any more damage if you go for dinner — as long as you stay away from the shooters. I can’t promise what might happen to you if you go down that path.
RP Tracks, 3457 Walker Ave. is open daily at 11 a.m.; call 901-327-1471 to check for closing hours as they sometimes vary by day because of COVID; still, it’s a late-night place.
