Newest COVID count in line with recent highs

Local COVID-19 data released Tuesday, Jan. 4, reveals 2,613 new cases in Shelby County.
The number represents an increase from Monday’s 574 cases, reported by the Shelby County Health Department.
The area’s highest number of new COVID cases since the pandemic’s start was reported on Jan. 2, 2022: 3,394. The seven-day average of COVID-19 cases is now 2,224.
As of today, there are also a total of 21,524 active cases in Shelby County. More than 4,150 of those are pediatric cases.
The area’s seven-day average of people vaccinated is now 1,641, with a total of 541,287 people who are vaccinated.
As of Dec. 29, the department reported that local hospitals were at 96% capacity in acute care facilities; area ICUs were at 92% capacity — 372 of those patients were COVID positive.
