City Council advances two questions for August ballot

Two ballot questions for the August ballot in Memphis advanced Tuesday, May 10, at the Memphis City Council.
The council approved on the first of three “readings” or votes on a referendum ordinance that would allow the local Democratic and Republican parties to hold primaries in city elections for mayor and city council.
The council also approved on the second of three readings for another referendum ordinance that would extend term limits for council members from the current limits of two consecutive terms of four-years each to three consecutive terms.
Council member Worth Morgan had planned to amend the term limits extension to have it apply only to newly elected council members and not current council members.
Morgan was absent at a session that saw seven of the 13 council members present — just enough for a quorum to conduct business.
If the measures pass all three readings they would go to city voters for ultimate approval or rejection.
