Code enforcement inspectors return to senior citizens high-rise

The city of Memphis is preparing a “comprehensive report” on any code violations inspectors find at the Serenity Towers at Highland senior citizens high-rise.

The city’s Public Works division sent code enforcement inspectors to the high-rise at 400 S. Highland Ave. Monday, June 13, as a follow-up to June 1 inspections of 104 of the 240 occupied units. Those remaining units were being inspected Monday.

Residents at the high-rise near the University of Memphis campus have complained recently of not having air conditioning, a lack of running water and problems with insects and mold.

The city inspections come as the summer heat in the city is expected to reach dangerous levels this week. The city is opening a cooling shelter for those across the city without air conditioning.

The inspections also follow the death of a resident earlier this month that prompted a new complaint in General Sessions Environmental Court by prosecutors with the District Attorney’s office.

The owners of Serenity Towers are due to return to environmental court on Tuesday, June 14.
