A Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy responding to a disturbance call in Cordova was run over, but not seriously injured, by a suspect Monday night, July 4.

About 9 p.m., two deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office encountered the man in a vehicle as they responded to a disturbance call in the 9200 block of Durhamshire Drive.

After the deputy was run over, both responding deputies shot at the driver.

The deputy who was run over was transported to Baptist Hospital East in non-critical condition.

The suspect, Charlie Gibson, 23, was transported to Regional One Health and remains in critical condition.

At the request of the District Attorney’s office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating the incident.

“Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for her further review and consideration,” TBI wrote.

“The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.”
