The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is responding to a shooting that resulted in an officer critically injured and a suspect dead.

The subject has been identified as James West Jr., 39, of Sarah, Mississippi.

The shooting occurred in the 4100 block of Winchester Road near the intersection of Lamar Avenue.

According to a preliminary statement from TBI, the Memphis Police Department received a call at approximately 9:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, about a suspicious vehicle at a gas station in the 4200 block of Winchester Road.

An officer made the scene about three minutes later and attempted to make contact with West.

For reasons that are still under investigation, gunfire erupted between the two individuals. Both were struck.

West ran west to a nearby business in the 4100 block of Winchester Road.

West was located in an idling vehicle and was pronounced dead.

The MPD officer was shot multiple times and transported to Regional One Health.

MPD Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis addressed the shooting and gave an update on the officer’s condition during a Memphis City Council Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee meeting.

“As you know, officers are constantly dealing with various critical kinds of situations, and fortunately, the officer is in stable condition right now,” she said. “And we are working with the hospital and will hopefully have him released later on today.”

Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy requested the investigation from TBI.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI special agents work to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence,” TBI’s statement reads. “As in any case, TBI’s investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for his consideration and review.”
