The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified Latoris A. Taylor as the suspect who was shot by a Memphis police officer Friday afternoon.
TBI was called to investigate the shooting.
On Friday, Dec. 9, Memphis Police Department officers were in the area of Star Line Road and Cimmaron Drive in Westwood investigating a carjacking that occurred the previous day.
“When a second vehicle approached it, officers attempted to make contact with the three individuals inside of the approaching vehicle,” said Keli McAlister, a public information officer for TBI.
This is the third time TBI has been called to investigate a shooting involving a police officer since Nov. 1, McAlister said.
The shooting occurred in the 4900 block of Cimmaron Drive at around 12:15 p.m., according to TBI.
Officers located the stolen vehicle and three males, who then fled on foot. Taylor, 40, was armed and reportedly shot at officers but did not injure any of them.
An officer returned fire and struck Taylor. The suspect was transported to Regional One Health, where he was pronounced dead.
The other two suspects, who were uninjured, were taken into custody.
Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy requested the investigation from TBI.
“TBI agents are working independently to determine that the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews,” McAlister said. “Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration.”
At the request of 30th DAG Steve Mulroy, TBI agents are responding to the 4900 of Cimmaron Dr. in Memphis where an officer-involved shooting has occurred. @TBIKeli will provide an update at the scene when possible.
