Man dies after exchanging fire with Memphis police officer, TBI says

In addition to a string of violent incidents in the evening hours of Friday, Dec. 16, and early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 17, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking in the events that left a man dead after allegedly exchanging fire with Memphis Police Department officers.

Suspect dies after exchanging fire with officers, 11:45 p.m.

According to TBI, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Memphis police officers on patrol say they observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of American Way and Goodlett Road.

Officers allegedly initiated a traffic stop, and the car allegedly sped off, losing control and driving into a grassy area in the 4700 block of Cochese Road.

According to TBI, four Black men dressed in all black were armed and ran from the vehicle. Memphis police officers allegedly chased one suspect on foot to the 4700 block of Cochese.

The suspect was identified as Jaylin Keshawn McKenzie, 20, of Atlanta, Georgia.

TBI said McKenzie allegedly turned and fired at officers, who returned fire, striking him. Additional officers made the scene and rendered aid, but McKenzie died from his injuries.

He was pronounced dead on the scene. According to TBI, the three other suspects are still at large. Officers on the scene were uninjured.

Shooting on Springdale Run Drive, 7:59 p.m.

At 7:59 p.m., MPD officers responded to a shooting on the 800 block of Springdale Run Drive. Two men and two women were transported to Regional One in critical condition.

One woman was transported by a privately owned vehicle to Regional One Health and is in critical condition.

The suspect(s) were in a white Infiniti. The suspect is known by the victims but is not in custody. This incident stemmed from a domestic situation. 

Shooting on Eastview Drive, 10:02 p.m.

At 10:02 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of Eastview Drive regarding a shooting.

Officers located a female victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to Regional One Health in critical condition.

MPD says preliminary information suggests the suspect and victim knew each other. Officers have one male suspect in custody.

Shooting on Ethel Street, 12:36 a.m., Dec. 17

At 12:36 a.m., officers responded to a shooting on the 1200 block of Ethel Street. A male victim was located and transported to Regional One in critical condition.


Shelby County DA’s office launches Justice Review Unit


There is no suspect information.

Two juveniles dead following shooting, 1:08 a.m.

At 1:08 a.m., officers responded to a shooting at Raines and Kirby roads. A male and female juvenile were pronounced deceased on the scene.

According to MPD, the suspect(s) were occupying a dark-colored sedan. 

Shooting on Sharpe Avenue, 2:30 a.m.

At 2:30 a.m., officers responded to a shooting on the 3300 block of Sharpe Avenue.

One male victim was located and transported in critical condition to Regional One. There is no suspect information.

Shooting on Bishop Dale Drive, 2:56 a.m.

At 2:56 a.m., officers responded to the 5900 block of Bishop Dale Drive regarding a shooting.

Officers located one male victim, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to Regional One in critical condition.

This is an ongoing investigation.
