A suspect is in critical condition after a struggle and shootout with Memphis Police Department officers Friday, Dec. 30.

Gun permits would be required in Shelby County under proposed bill

No officers were injured, and the suspect has been identified as a 17-year-old juvenile.

At 6:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, officers observed a black Dodge Challenger in the 1900 block of Edward Cove near the Vollintine-Evergreen area. The car fit the description of a vehicle involved in a shots-fired call earlier Friday.

The officers confirmed the Challenger was stolen and observed an armed male sleeping in the vehicle. Officers made contact with the suspect, and a struggle over the gun ensued.

“As officers approached the car, they spotted a male sleeping inside with what appeared to be a handgun on his lap,” according to Keli McAlister, Public Information Officer for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Shots were fired, and the suspect was struck; he was transported to Regional One in critical condition.
