The Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office will not pursue criminal charges at the heart of a civil lawsuit involving Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant and another man, according to a statement released by the DA’s office.

Officials did not find enough evidence in the incident to pursue a criminal case, but a civil lawsuit has been filed.

“The DA’s office is aware of the incident, and after a careful review of the facts, decided that there was not enough evidence to proceed with a case,” the statement read. “We cannot comment on a pending lawsuit.”

The incident was investigated as a case of alleged simple assault.

According to a Shelby County Sherrif’s Office incident report, the alleged victim said he was playing basketball at Morant’s house on July 26 “when Morant became angry and ‘jumped him’ striking him in the head and face with a closed fist.”

The alleged victim also said Morant, according to the report, knocked him to the ground and “continued to strike him with a closed fist,” and that a second man also struck him with a closed fist.

According to the report, “Deputies observed a large knot” on the victim’s head.

In a Sept. 1 interview, according to a supplemental report filed after the case was handed over to detectives, Morant said “the victim threw the ball at him intentionally and began to approach him as if he wanted to fight,” and that “he struck (the) victim” in self-defense.

Morant also told detectives, the report said, that “as (the) victim was being escorted from the property he made verbal threats stating ‘he’d light his house up.’”

TMZ, a tabloid website, first reported Tuesday that a lawsuit has been filed.

“Our law firm represents the minor plaintiff in a civil lawsuit filed against Temetrius Jamal Morant and Davonte Pack,” the Adelman Law Firm said in a statement released Tuesday to WMC-TV.

“In order to protect the privacy rights of our client as well as the integrity of the judicial system, we thought it best to make an official statement.

“Our client’s mental and physical well-being now and in his future are our priorities. We do not intend to make any further comments on this pending lawsuit and request that no further efforts be made to contact our client or his family.”

A direct message sent by The Daily Memphian to the purported victim Tuesday has not been returned. Neither has a phone message left for his current high school coach.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said during the team’s practice Tuesday, Jan. 3 that the organization would have no comment.

Morant was not made available at the practice, held at FedExForum before the team left Memphis for its game Wednesday night, Jan. 4, in Charlotte.

The sheriff’s department report said the alleged victim was 17 years old at the time of the incident. The TMZ report said the lawsuit — filed in September — has been sealed.
