Welcome to this weekly roundup of what Memphians are saying and what’s being said about Memphis on social media, curated by digital desk reporter Jasmine McCraven.
#UpNext
This week Apple Music announced rapper GloRilla as its “Up Next” artist of the month. According to Billboard, the program was launched by the digital streaming platform in 2017 to place an “international local focus” on emerging artists.
As part of the rollout, GloRilla released a three-minute Apple Music documentary which shows the rap star going back to her hometown of Memphis.
GloRilla posted a preview of the short film on Instagram Wednesday.
Science Guy
Scientist, engineer and inventor Bill Nye is well known for his 90s PBS show “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” But this week Nye became a trending topic on Twitter for his other talents.
The New York Times bestselling author went viral this week after a video of him dancing to “Chromosomes” by Memphis rapper Key Glock surfaced online. The song is from the artists’ recently released album “Glockoma 2.”
In the clip, Nye can be seen moving down the runway during the Blue Jacket Fashion Show in New York last month. The annual show is held in support of prostate cancer awareness.
Fans of Key Glock reacted to the footage and the rapper also posted the moment on Instagram.
Bill Nye dancing to Key Glock was the wholesome content I needed today.

‘Welcome back 12’
Following the NBA’s announcement of Ja Morant’s return to the Memphis Grizzlies after an eight game suspension, basketball fans are showering Morant with supportive messages on social media.
Discussions include both excitement for Morant’s return and critics who may feel like Morant’s counseling program could have been longer.
Fans have also been reacting to Morant’s sit-down interview with sports analyst Jalen Rose regarding the incident that led to his eight-game suspension.

Haters gonna hate because they know how much of a threat on the court he is. Can't convince me otherwise.

The Ja Morant redemption tour is going to be the best show in the NBA.

Truly believe Ja is going to come out of this focused and improved. Extremely happy he took time to help himself. Mental health is so much bigger than basketball.

Dillon the Villain
After Dillon Brooks said he didn’t like Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green at all, the two players have since continued their ongoing spat.
Daily Memphian writer Chris Herrington reported last week that Green responded to Brooks’ comments on his self-titled podcast by saying, “If you’ve ever wondered why the Memphis Grizzlies is not ready to compete for a championship, look no further than this idiot right here.”
And this week, fans of Green were more than happy to see a resurfaced video of Brooks from 2016 saying he wanted to be “like a Draymond Green” for his University of Oregon Ducks team. Brooks played for the university from 2014-2017.
Bleacher Report posted the throwback video of Brooks on social media. Journalist Omo Mustard seemingly compared Brooks to Buddy Pine, a fictional character from “The Incredibles.”
In the Disney film, Pine initially shows aspirations of becoming a superhero like that of Mr. Incredible, but ultimately becomes the movie’s villain who would turn on his former idol.
