Karen Camper: “When I announced that I was going to run, they (Turner and Bonner) were already in the race, and that was before a suit was filed or an opinion was ever done. I don’t know that it really changes that, at least for me and my campaign. I do feel as if residency should be a requirement.”

Frank Colvett: “I think the court has ruled … and the more the merrier.”

J.W. Gibson: “It has an impact. I don’t think it necessarily has an impact on my campaign. … We’ve just got to be honest with the realization that anybody can run from anywhere without any residency. It’s not a fair proposition. I don’t think any Memphians would suggest to you that’s a fair proposition. That is what it is. The decision has been made. And I’m a law-abiding citizen. … Let’s keep our eye on the prize.”

Michelle McKissack: “I believe a Memphian should be leading Memphis and not someone who is from the suburbs. … When you decide to live outside of Memphis for decades, that’s completely your choice. You made that choice. And there’s something that when you are living in the city of Memphis you are experiencing day-in and day-out the trials, the triumphs. I think it matters to voters. There’s the court of opinion and the court of opinion is that a lot of people are not happy with that.”

Paul Young: “It definitely makes a difference. There are more people that we know are going to be in the race. It’s a big field and my goal is still the same, demonstrate that I am the right person at the right time for this city. … That work is not going to stop. We’re just going to go even harder.”
