Kyran Bacchus came through at the right time for Southwind's baseball team Wednesday.

Bacchus, the Jaguars' senior shortstop, hit a walk-off double to cap a three-run rally and give his team a 10-9 victory over Central in the FCA Diamond Challenge at Sowell Field. Bacchus' hit made a winning pitcher out of Justin Harrington.

For Central, A.J. Roberson hit a home run while Jacey Marshall took the loss. The Warriors hurt their cause with five errors.

In other Classic games, Syncere  Pruitt got plenty of offensive support as Middle College blanked Hillcrest, 19-0. Keyshawn Harris, expected to be his team's starting quarterback in the fall, picked up the win on the mound as Whitehaven handled Cordova, 15-2.

DeSoto Central breaks out the big bats

It's still early. But DeSoto Central is making a strong case for having the team to beat in Mississippi 6A this season.

The Jaguars (11-2) hit early and often on Wednesday, posting run-rule victories over West Union (15-2) and Oxford (18-0). In the opener, Kyle Booker, Alex Frillman, Blaze Jordan, Wesley Sides and Shemaar Stapleton all went deep as part of a 14-hit attack. Booker and Jordan each drove in three runs.

Frillman, Jordan and Stapleton also left the yard against Oxford along with Connar Gardner. Frillman drove in four runs while Stapleton and Gardner had three RBI each. Frillman, the team's senior catcher, has been on a tear over the last three games, going 6 for 11 with four homers and 11 RBI.

Aiden Foeller and Colby Crocker were the winning pitchers.

Around the horn

Wil Wood continued the run of strong early-season pitching in the area, tossing a no-hitter for St. George's in a 4-0 victory over Harrison Central. … Francisco Cartaya and Ty Leatherwood each drove in three runs to back a strong start from Wade Goetz as Collierville improved to 3-0 with a 9-2 over Marshall Academy. The Dragons' pitching staff has allowed three runs in its three games. … Dawson Williams and Peter Nearn each had three hits and Jacob Hatcher hit his first home run of the season in ECS' 12-4 victory over Germantown. Hatcher and Brady Holloway had two hits while James Nichols got the win, allowing three hits and one earned run.

University of Memphis signee Austin Baskin homered twice and Stanton Connell and Carter Davis also left the yard as Covington defeated Lausanne, 16-7. Bam Bruckman was a triple shy of the cycle for the Lynx. … John Michael Trainum allowed just two hits and struck out five in five innings and Cole Putnam hit a three-run homer to lift FACS over Copiah (Miss.) Academy, 9-0.

St. Benedict fell to 2-2, losing to North Pike (Miss.), 7-2 in the Battle of the Beach Tournament in Biloxi. Kaeden Culpepper had three hits while Chris Sanford took the loss. … MUS (1-2) also fell in Biloxi, 5-4 against Jackson (Miss.) Prep. Griff Griffin scored twice for the Owls while Will Portera drove in two runs.

In softball, St. Benedict improved to 3-0 on its season-opening trip to Orlando with a pair of victories over Bradley Central. In the opener, Reagan Smith homered and Therese Daigre and Alexie Griffin each had two hits in a 9-6 victory. Jessi Smith drove in five runs and Neely Taylor four in the nightcap as St. Benedict won easily, 19-7. Josie Gex won both contests.
