Penny Hardaway is sticking by Mikey Williams, a four-star signee in Memphis’ 2023 class who is facing six felony gun charges.
Two days after Williams had his preliminary hearing postponed for a third time Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Tigers’ coach said nothing has changed about Williams’ status with the program.
“(It’s) frustrating for Mikey,” Hardaway said Thursday during a reception for the annual Penny Hardaway Memphis District Golf Classic. “We’re just trying to continue to support him. That’s about it. That’s all I can do.”
Williams, a 6-foot-3 combo guard out of California’s San Ysidro High, was arrested April 13 and charged with five counts of assault with a firearm and one count of shooting at an occupied vehicle during a March 27 incident outside of his San Diego-area home. He was released on $50,000 bail and pleaded not guilty to all charges on April 20.
Williams’ preliminary hearing is now set for Oct. 10 in El Cajon (California) Superior Court.
The hearing was originally scheduled for June 29 before it was initially postponed to July 12 at the request of Williams’ lawyer, Troy P. Owens. It was then postponed to Sept. 5 before being pushed back again, also at Owens’ request.
Despite Williams’ uncertain future with the Tigers’ program, his name — Michael Anthony Williams — appears in the University of Memphis’ online student directory. Hardaway said Thursday that he believes Williams is in fact enrolled at the university.
“I think Mikey is enrolled,” Hardaway said. “That’s per my knowledge.”
Williams also remains listed on the team’s online roster.
It was also on Tuesday when a Facebook account that appears to belong to Williams posted a message that suggested Williams would be in Memphis during the upcoming season.
“Memphis said I’m too famous to do in person classes so that’s why y’all haven’t seen me yet but I will be down there for basketball season,” the post read.
On Thursday, the same account uploaded a picture of Williams and Tigers freshman forward JJ Taylor — who were teammates last season at San Ysidro — posing together in a gymnasium.
“Focused, positive and ready for a successful academic year!” this latest post read.
For now, though, Hardaway said the Tigers are moving forward without Williams on campus as the group gets set for the upcoming season.
“We’re still carrying on with the guys that are here,” Hardaway said. “But our prayers and our thoughts are with Mikey.”
