A barricade situation in an apartment complex on Summer Avenue has been resolved, police said Wednesday, Sept. 20.
The suspect, who had been at a standoff with police for about 11 hours, was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect is Martin Perez-Estrada, 29. He has been charged with criminal attempt of second-degree murder, eight counts of aggravated assault, ten counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and employing a firearm with intent to commit a felony.
Memphis Police Department officials worked the scene at the Summer Hills apartments in the 6100 block of Ashton Road.
Police received a call at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, about an armed individual in an apartment unit with two roommates.
Perez-Estrada threatened to shoot the roommates, who managed to escape, said Shawn Jones, assistant chief of police services.
“When officers arrived, they made contact with a victim near the scene and were advised that when he came home, his roommate pointed a long gun at him,” an MPD press release reads. “The victim immediately left the apartment.”
When officers arrived to make contact with Perez-Estrada, they heard gunshots inside the unit.
“A second roommate was still inside when the shots were fired, but he was able to get outside and was brought to safety by officers,” the press release said.
Negotiation attempts were initially unsuccessful, so gas was deployed into the apartment. Jones said the suspect shot towards officers, and a bullet ricocheted, injuring one of the officers. The officer was transported to Regional One Health in non-critical condition.
The suspect fired six shots at police using a handgun and a rifle, Jones said.
Police did not fire back, he said.
A Spanish-speaking negotiator was able to successfully resolve the situation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office were assisting.
The situation was resolved by about 11 a.m.
Jones said a motive was not clear yet.
Residents in the apartment complex were evacuated during the incident.
All lanes were blocked on Summer between Raleigh LaGrange and Trafalgar roads. As of around 11:30 a.m., the roadway was cleared for traffic.
The Memphis Police Department posted a traffic alert early in the morning Wednesday, Sept. 20, encouraging travelers to choose an alternative route.
