Still no word from NCAA — but DeAndre Williams is enrolled at Memphis

DeAndre Williams is again a student at the University of Memphis.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the 6-foot-9 former All-AAC forward will be back with the Tigers for a fourth season, though. Williams still awaits a decision from the NCAA on his request for reconsideration regarding his eligibility status.

But, according to his lawyer, Don Jackson, Williams is enrolled at the university for the fall semester and has been since at least the Sept. 1 deadline to add courses. Williams’ name — DeAndre Baldwin Williams — also appears in Memphis’ online student directory.

Jackson added that although neither he nor Memphis have received a decision on whether Williams will be granted an additional season of eligibility, the Tigers’ athletics compliance office submitted additional information pertaining to Williams’ case to the NCAA on Monday, Sept. 18.

This comes after Memphis initially sent various documents and other pertinent information to the NCAA on July 10 in an attempt to prove it was misadvisement that led to Williams being stripped of a season of eligibility in 2018-19.

Williams transferred to Memphis in 2020 after suiting up for Evansville in the 2019-20 season and has played the past three seasons with the Tigers. He averaged 17.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 2022-23.

Coach Penny Hardaway told reporters Sept. 1 that he was still optimistic that the NCAA would grant Williams one more season.

“We’re just waiting,” Hardaway said. “We feel like we have a really good case — we presented a really good case for them. And we’ll see what they do.”
