You can’t have an AAC women’s soccer championship match without the University of Memphis.
Coach Brooks Monaghan’s team earned its third consecutive trip to the tournament final Thursday, Nov. 2, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, getting a goal in each half and defeating Charlotte, 2-0. The Tigers (17-1-0) will face SMU in Sunday’s 1 p.m. CDT (ESPNU) title game as they look to three-peat as champions.
Two freshmen working in harmony got the Tigers on the board with about 13 minutes to go in the first half. After some nice build-up play, Honoka Hamano crossed for Anna Hauer, who touched it into the net for her eighth goal of the year.
Memphis then secured the result with about 10 minutes to go when Mya Jones — who was named the conference’s offensive player of the year earlier in the week — beat Charlotte’s excellent Emma Wakeman — who was credited with 12 saves — to score from the penalty spot.
The Tigers have now won 14 in a row since a 2-1 setback against Alabama on Aug. 27, extending their best run in program history. They are now 13-6-2 all-time in AAC tournament play.
Memphis defeated SMU, 2-1, on Sept. 28, in a home match for the Tigers.
