On the first weekend of the inaugural Memphis Autozone Park Deck the Diamond Holiday Spectacular, Millington native Madison Wellborn searched for the perfect words to describe her experience at the radiantly lit AutoZone Park.
“I’ve lived in Memphis for a long time, and I don’t remember them having an event like this,” Wellborn said.
On a cool Sunday afternoon in November, people enjoyed the lights, sipped some hot chocolate, and enjoyed live music and fireworks at the Memphis Autozone Park Deck the Diamond event.
Guests enter AutoZone Park at field level and see more than 190 lit figures positioned around a massive 60-foot Christmas tree.
A 3,600 square-foot ice rink in the ball park’s left field was glistening and ready for ice skaters to shred their blades.
Seattle native Omar Lira was familiar with AutoZone Park because they had attended 901 FC games but marveled at the rink and the chance to skate at Deck the Diamond.
“When you get to ice skate, you can’t pass up the opportunity,” Lira said.
Archways, reindeer, presents and trains lit up the ballpark, glowing gold, white and purple.
“We are excited to bring this unique, one-of-a-kind event to Downtown Memphis,” said Craig Unger, President and General Manager of the Memphis Redbirds.
“We hope this is an event that people can build their holiday traditions around for years to come as we continue to make AutoZone Park a year-round destination.”
The Redbirds were able to make the attraction possible through a partnership with Enchant.
Enchant installs Christmas-themed mazes, villages and light displays at seven stadiums across the United States — mostly minor league baseball and soccer venues — the Redbirds’ Triple-A minor league field.
“To do a mix of the baseball offseason and the Christmas holiday is a good idea for people to still be connected with AutoZone Park,” Redbirds’ ticket representative Emilian Zavala said.
While Wellborn attended the event to support “Wade and Clay” a band performing live, she does have plans to return before the event closes for the year.
“I would love to probably get my family and bring them out here,” Wellborn said. “They're going to come tonight, but I'm thinking it would be fun to come together, especially since there’s a lot of good spots for photo opportunities.”
Deck the Diamond began Friday, Nov. 24 and runs weekends and select weekdays until Dec. 31. Ticket prices are $29.50 per person, but kids ages two and under are free.
