David Jones named to Wooden Award late-season watchlist

David Jones continues to get recognized as one of the best players in college basketball.
Jones, Memphis’ 6-foot-6 wing, has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 Watch List. The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced the 20 members of the watch list Tuesday evening on ESPN2.
The Wooden Award is given annually to the most outstanding player in college basketball.
Members of the latest watch list for the prestigious honor were chosen based on their performances during the 2023-24 thus far by a poll of national college basketball experts. Jones had also made the award’s Midseason Top 25 Watch List, which was announced Jan. 10.
Jones leads the Tigers — and the AAC — with 21.8 points per game to go with 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.6 assists per game. He’s shooting 46.5% from the floor and 38.1% from 3-point range.
The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, native is among the best is 12th in the nation in total points scored (436) and 25th in free throws made (108).
The players on the list “are considered strong candidates for the 2024 John R. Wooden Award Men’s Player of the Year.” Players not chosen to the late-season list are still eligible for the award’s national ballot, which will consist of 15 players.
