U of M museum puts entire African collection on display
Art Museum of University of Memphis Director Leslie Luebbers discusses the collection of African art during the “All of Africa” exhibition on Thursday, August 15, 2024 (Ziggy Mack/Special to The Daily Memphian)
Visitors to the Art Museum of the University of Memphis can now view its entire nearly 800-item African art collection.
From artifacts from 1300s Central Africa to a modern-day fish-shaped coffin from Ghana, every item is on display in the museum’s Main Gallery.
This exhibition is unusual; typically museums install exhibits using select pieces while most of the collection remains in storage. While the AMUM is renovating its existing African Gallery, it’s giving visitors a rare chance to see everything at once.
