Tim Duncan returns to Memphis to help Tigers ‘kick the door in’

Tim Duncan knows firsthand what the highs look and feel like. It’s something he’ll never forget.

The former Memphis Tiger forward’s college career spanned four seasons under legendary coach Larry Finch and was highlighted by the program’s trip to the Elite Eight in the 1991-92 season.

“When we beat Georgia Tech in the Sweet 16 to go to the Elite Eight, that was one of the happiest moments of my life,” Duncan said to The Daily Memphian. “We were down in the game and we fought and got into overtime. It was just a group effort. … And on that team, there were nine or 10 of us from Memphis. So a bunch of guys from Memphis making it to the Elite Eight was truly, truly special.”

Duncan, a Memphis native who knew he wanted to be a Tiger from the time he was 6 years old, now is seeing another chapter of a childhood dream come full circle in an opportunity that will allow him to help elevate Memphis Athletics across the board.

On Thursday, the University of Memphis announced athletic director Ed Scott had hired Duncan as his senior deputy athletics director.
