The Shelby County Chancery Court order that puts a gun-control referendum to Memphis voters on the Nov. 5 ballot was formally entered Friday, Sept. 13, by Chancellor Melanie Taylor Jefferson.
With it, the clock starts ticking on a possible expedited appeal of the ruling by the Tennessee attorney general’s office. That’s against a deadline of Sept. 21, the date the Shelby County Election Commission has set as the date by which it will finalize the ballot.
The Tennessee Supreme Court would have to agree to take the case and bypass the state Court of Appeals.
