Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that Vince Williams Jr. suffered a stress reaction, not a stress fracture. A stress reaction is a condition that can lead to a stress fracture, which is a tiny crack in a bone.
The Memphis Grizzlies provided a medical update on wing Vince Williams Jr. on Friday, announcing that he experienced pain in his left shin during recent training.
Imaging revealed Williams has a stress reaction in his upper tibia. He will be reevaluated in four weeks and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Grizzlies are scheduled to begin training camp next week. The four-week window means Williams will miss the entirety of the preseason and likely the beginning of the 2024-25 regular season.
Memphis is already dealing with an injury to GG Jackson, who will be out at least until early December with a fracture in his foot.
Williams was a revelation last season for Memphis, averaging 10 points and 4.4 rebounds. He scored in double digits for 16 straight games over a stretch of several weeks, and also led the team in defensive rebounding percentage.
If Williams is unable to return quickly once the season begins, the Grizzlies will be missing one of its best defensive assets on the perimeter. Memphis only has 13 players on its main roster currently, and now two players are unavailable.
