Southaven now requires longer notice to issue special event permits

In response to an influx of requests, the City of Southaven now requires 21 days notice before it will issue a special event permit.

Southaven’s Board of Aldermen passed a new application process last month for organizers hopeful of bringing events to the city. The ordinance is now in effect.

“We’ve had an enormous amount of new requests for events,” Mayor Darren Musselwhite said during a Southaven board meeting on Sept. 17. “This whole ordinance is built around the main goal of public safety, and we can never get in a situation where we have a gathering that’s too large, that overwhelms our ability to keep the people safe.”

Among examples of such events are fairs, carnivals, block parties and parades. Permits are not required for completely indoor events and funeral processions.
