He previously covered LSU sports in Baton Rouge, and the University of Louisiana football and basketball for The Daily Advertiser/USA TODAY Network in Lafayette, the NBA’s Utah Jazz for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning for the St. Petersburg Times in Florida, and West Texas State basketball for the Amarillo Globe News in Texas.

A late field goal to take the lead was nice. A late sack to seal Memphis’ 33-28 win over Charlotte was nicer.

But one play in particular was nicest, and without it coach Ryan Silverfield and the Memphis Tigers — not to mention their harshest critics, and perhaps even some of their most-ardent supporters — might be looking back on Saturday a lot differently.

“I don’t think about too many plays in my career,” Silverfield said, “but that was a neat deal.”

Thirty-seven seconds remained. Memphis trailed by 4, 28-24.

So when Seth Henigan stepped back and looked left as Roc Taylor raced to the corner of the end zone on that side of the field at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, much hung in the balance.
