Shelby County Commission looks for smoother, swifter budget season

Shelby County Commissioners are hoping to avoid last minute budget amendments and see a quicker path to votes ahead of the spring budget season with some new ground rules.

Seven of the 13 commissioners met Saturday, Dec. 14, at Shelby Farms Park for a budget retreat that was more about the ground rules than dollar figures and line items.

There aren’t any budget specifics at that point. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris is scheduled to present his budget proposal April 30 to the commission.

Commission chairman Michael Whaley and Budget Committee chairwoman Miska Clay Bibbs instead reviewed the new rules and a budget hearing schedule that begins in January, four months before Harris’ budget presentation.
