What the county revenue forecast could mean for your property taxes

By , Daily Memphian Updated: January 25, 2025 10:22 AM CT | Published: January 24, 2025 12:02 PM CT

Shelby County Assessor Melvin Burgess Jr. says property values in the recently completed countywide property reappraisal are up about 27% compared to property values in 2021.

And Shelby County Trustee Regina Newman says the county could see $44.5 million more in property tax revenue just from other factors for the new fiscal year that begins July 1.

“The long and short of it is we stand by these numbers,” Burgess told Shelby County Commissioners this month at the first hearing of the county’s budget season.

Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris says the forecast is cause for optimism and maybe for keeping the county’s property tax rate at $3.39
