Herrington: As playoffs approach, Grizzlies’ two-track season approaches one big test

Chris Herrington has covered the Memphis Grizzlies, in one way or another, since the franchise’s second season in Memphis, while also writing about music, movies, food and civic life. As far as he knows, he’s the only member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association who is also a member of a film critics group and has also voted in national music critic polls for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice (RIP). He and his wife have two kids and, for reasons that sometimes elude him, three dogs.
The Memphis Grizzlies just experienced a frustrating but perhaps ruefully instructive weekend, with back-to-back home losses on Friday and Saturday night by a combined three points.
When games are as close as Friday’s 114-113 loss to the New York Knicks and Saturday’s 130-128 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, they come with a bundle of “ifs” and perhaps too much focus on the final minutes.
Against the Knicks, maybe the Grizzlies win if Ja Morant doesn’t put too much heat on a needless, after-the-first-half-buzzer full-court heave that drew a technical foul.
