Calkins: ‘What a difference a year makes,’ says Penny Hardaway — as he cuts down the net

Geoff Calkins has been chronicling Memphis and Memphis sports for more than two decades. He is host of "The Geoff Calkins Show" from 9-11 a.m. M-F on 92.9 FM. Calkins has been named the best sports columnist in the country five times by the Associated Press sports editors, but still figures his best columns are about the people who make Memphis what it is.
It had been seven years since Hardaway was introduced as the head coach of the Memphis Tigers in front of a raucous crowd at the Laurie-Walton Basketball Center. It had been — to be even more precise — 2,545 days.
But Hardaway was finally able to celebrate a regular-season title at Memphis. He was finally able to cut down a net in the city he loves so much.
