The Early Word: Michelin stars align, and 201 Poplar is a taxing problem

How about that storm, Memphis? It’s Thursday, April 3, and it was a long night if you were awakened by the thunder. Luckily, the tornado warnings around Memphis didn’t produce any twisters in the city. (Maybe the weather experts were wrong, and the bluffs protect us after all. Or maybe it was just the Pyramid’s crystal skull.)

There was a wicked tornado that passed over the interstate near Trumann, Arkansas, though, less than an hour from here. And a twister touched down in Lake City, Arkansas. Apparently, the “generational flooding” is still to come.

The Memphis Grizzlies are weathering their own storm of sorts, as their losing streak continues. Here’s hoping the metaphorical clouds part tonight with a win as the Grizz take on the Miami Heat.

You may soon be able to impress your date with a night out at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Memphis. The famed Michelin Guide is working on a new guidebook focused on the American South, which will include six Southern states, including Tennessee. (It looks like my home state of Arkansas is getting snubbed though.)

“If you haven’t visited 201 Poplar, you should. It’s absolutely one of the most troubling places of government property in the state,” said state Sen. Jeff Yarbro, D-Nashville.

Yarbro echoed concerns of his Senate colleagues from Memphis, who are proposing a 1% increase to Shelby County’s sales and use tax to fund a new jail. The bill, a response to the jail’s deteriorating conditions, passed a Senate committee on Wednesday. If passed by the full General Assembly, the local sales tax rate would increase to 3.75%. That’s on top of the state’s 7% sales tax.

Also, we look into the MSCS interim super’s contract, a state school takeover bill moves ahead and the AAC tourney considers Memphis.
