Jigsaw: Hit the Burke’s

By , Daily Memphian Published: April 28, 2025 4:00 AM CT

In some ways, it’s a miracle you can still walk into Burke’s Book Store, leaf through gently used books and walk away with a biography of Winston Churchill, a run of manga or perhaps even a signed John Grisham.

Founded in Downtown Memphis in the decade after the Civil War, Burke’s has survived through four different locations, six different sets of owners, and a rapidly changing, often terrifying retail landscape that has devoured many larger bookstores, including such chains as Borders, Waldenbooks and more.

But 150 years later — give or take — Burke’s remains, perhaps a little bent but still unbroken. And co-owners Cheryl Mesler and her husband Corey Mesler have no plans to go anywhere, as they made clear Saturday, April 26, while celebrating the 12th annual Independent Bookstore Day with cookies, sales and even mystery prizes tucked inside wrapped-up books.

Burke’s storied 150-year history could fill a book
