The making of Shelby County’s budget and tax rate

After Shelby County commissioners gave final approval to a new affordable housing initiative Monday, June 23, Chairman Michael Whaley announced, “I think it’s main event time.”
With that, the Shelby County Board of Commissioners had run through every non-budget item on its 72-item agenda.
The 13 commissioners then began debating and voting on a series of resolutions and ordinances that completed the next-to-last budget season of their four-year term shortly after 11 p.m.
