More Summer Ave. color may fade with church closing
Craig Thompson painted the familiar mural at Grimes Memorial United Methodist Church that depicts Jesus teaching to five children and two women. “I went into the sanctuary every morning and prayed about it and asked God to guide me,” Thompson recalled of painting the mural in 1982. The church building and 800-square-foot mural may not be long for this world now that the building has been sold to a businessman/developer. (Jim Weber/Daily Memphian)
The final worship service for Grimes Memorial United Methodist Church is Sunday. A developer has bought the property that has featured a large, religious mural seen by Summer Avenue travelers for 37 years.
