When walking under the canopy of threes, it’s hard to believe the forest is less than 100 yeasr old. In 1933, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park became a New Deal recreation demonstration area under the National Park Service (NPS). With funds from the NPS and labor by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a new day dawned. Young men, employed by the CCC, started the restoration project by reclaiming eroded land, blazing trails and planting thousands of trees.
Their work was continued by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which built park cabins, roads and picnic sites. NPS turned Shelby Forest over to the state in 1944, and it joined Tennessee’s state park system.
