A FedEx jet bearing Fred Smith’s initials roared over the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind after a somber moment of silence.
The Daily Memphian reporter Parth Uphadhyaya wrote about the event, where onlookers felt the ground tremble as the aircraft soared above.
Smith died June 21. Geoff Calkins talked the farewell to Smith in a recent column, On Fred Smith’s 81st birthday, the city he loved said goodbye.
Bravo Zulu is a naval term that means “well done.” In an earlier column, Calkins shared a quote from FESJC chairman Jack Sammons, who said, “... one of the last things he said to me was, ‘I’m immensely proud of what you and the 1,600 volunteers at St. Jude have accomplished.’ ... That was in the parking lot as we were parting. He said, ‘Bravo Zulu.’”
